The Challenge
Designing Style Print required addressing several key challenges to create an engaging and seamless geolocated experience:
Geolocation and Real-Time Interaction: Ensuring accurate geolocation data and providing real-time updates as users navigate the city’s architectural sites.
Combining Architecture with Fashion Design: Crafting a cohesive experience that allowed users to visualize architectural elements as wearable fashion items, while also maintaining an intuitive interface.
User Engagement and Reward System: Designing a system to keep users motivated by offering rewards like discount codes and invitations to events, encouraging further exploration.
Educational and Aesthetic Appeal: Merging informative content about architectural sites with a visually appealing design to cater to both education and creativity.
The Process
Research and Theoretical Analysis: Examined existing geolocation-based apps (e.g., Pokémon Go, Snap’s Lens Studio) and studied the relationship between fashion and architecture. I analyzed how geolocated narratives can be used to create immersive experiences, drawing on theories of locative media and augmented reality.
Audience Definition: Identified the target audience as young adults and design enthusiasts interested in fashion and architecture. The appeal lies in creative expression, local exploration, and gaining unique fashion insights.
Wireframing and Prototyping: Created wireframes to map user flows and designed interactive prototypes to simulate the experience of capturing architectural details and converting them into fashion items.
Feature Development: Defined key features including location-based clues, interactive design tools, real-time navigation, and a rewards system. Each feature was mapped out to enhance user engagement and provide a cohesive experience across all app functions.
Testing and Refinement: Conducted usability testing to gather feedback on navigation, the fashion design tool’s usability, and the rewards system. Based on feedback, I refined app functionalities for seamless interaction.
The Solution
Style Print offers an innovative geolocated experience where users blend their environment’s architectural patterns with digital fashion design. Key features include:
Geolocation-Based Exploration: Users receive location-based clues that guide them to 10 unique architectural sites within a 25km radius, unlocking new design opportunities at each stop.
Interactive Design Tool: At each location, users take photos of architectural details, like the clock face at Flinders Street Station. These images are then transformed into clothing patterns or accessories for their avatars, allowing users to express creativity and personalize their fashion experience.
Rewards and Community Engagement: Each completed outfit unlocks discounts from local fashion brands, motivating users to continue exploring. Upon completing the tour, users receive invitations to a fashion event, where they can showcase their designs and connect with fashion designers and enthusiasts.
Educational Content: Architectural sites come with information panels that provide historical or design insights, adding educational value and enhancing the user’s connection with the location.
Key takeaways
Creativity and Expression: Style Print successfully merges architectural exploration with fashion design, creating a novel way for users to interact with their surroundings through a lens of creativity.
Location-Based Learning: By providing historical and design facts, the app elevates the user experience beyond entertainment, offering educational value that encourages users to appreciate architecture’s role in everyday life.
User Motivation through Rewards: Incorporating discounts and event invitations as rewards effectively drives engagement and supports local businesses, highlighting the app’s community-centered approach.
Enhanced Community and Networking: The final fashion event not only adds a sense of accomplishment but also builds community among users and provides exposure to emerging designers, fostering a collaborative fashion and design space.
Style Print combines nostalgia, artistic exploration, and technology, turning the cityscape into a canvas for fashion inspiration. Through this unique fusion of fashion and architecture, the app encourages users to see their surroundings in new, creative ways, merging real-world exploration with digital design.
